The history of Wing Chun

In historical martial art terms the Wing Chun system is relatively young compared to some other martial arts systems being practiced today which can trace their origins back thousands of years.

The Wing Chun system dates back approx 450 years. Legend has it that a young female nun called Yim Wing Chun was taken as a disciple student of Ng Mui who was one of the venerable 5 elders who studied at the Siu Lam temple. Legend states that Ng Mui had witnessed a fight between a Snake and a Crane which inspired the creation of new body movements. Yim Wing Chun used these techniques and concepts and incorporated them into her new system.

After marrying her true love she taught the new system to her husband Leung Bok-Chao and he named the system “Wing Chun” after her. Wing Chun translates as “Beautiful Springtime” Leung Bok-Chao then passed the system onto members of the Red Boat Opera troop, two of whom were Leung Yee-Tai who used a long Pole to steer the boat and Wong Wah-Bo. Between them they studied and mastered the Wing Chun system and the 6 and a half point pole form was created. It was then added to the Wing Chun system.

Dr Leung Jan from the Fatshan province learnt the Wing Chun system from 2 Kung Fu brothers Leung Yee-Tai and Wong Wah-Bo. Through his skills in the system he earned the name of Wing Chun Wong “King of Wing Chun”.

Through Leung Jan’s many victories in fights the Wing Chun system grew in popularity. This has helped Wing Chun spread to all corners of the world today.

The Wing Chun system incorporates techniques and powers from both the Fukien White Crane Kung Fu and Emei Snake Kung Fu systems of Shaolin.
